Selected experience

Broadcast launches and investment decisions.

A national television service, a spectrum investment decision and a station transition. Selected examples from Mark’s operating career show the work he led and what it required.

National service launch

Orby TV

A satellite television service,
built from the ground up.

Mark’s role
Chief technology officer
and co-founder
  1. Designed the system
  2. Built the team
  3. Launched the service

Getting the whole service ready together

Orby TV set out to launch a national satellite television service with its own broadcast platform and consumer equipment. The broadcast system, receiver, suppliers, logistics and customer operations all had to be ready for launch.

Mark designed the system and built the engineering and logistics team. He chose equipment vendors, negotiated contracts, led receiver development and connected the broadcast system to launch operations.

The launch

Orby TV launched its national service in under one year and on budget.

Broadcast investment

The spectrum decision

Testing station bids before
the FCC auction.

Mark’s role
Developed the auction software and supported bidding decisions

Weighing the proceeds against the portfolio

A broadcaster entered the FCC spectrum incentive auction with a large station portfolio and many possible bid combinations. It needed to weigh potential auction proceeds against the long-term value of the stations it retained.

Mark led the analysis and wrote auction software to test station bids and portfolio options before the company committed.

The outcome

Winning bids generated $84 million while the broadcaster kept its station portfolio intact.

ATSC 3.0 launch

A station transition

A new broadcast service,
with existing channels moving to partners.

Mark’s role
Project lead for the broadcaster’s
station-transition work

Connecting the installation to everything around it

A major broadcaster prepared a station to host ATSC 3.0 while its existing program services moved to partner stations. The launch required FCC permission, station agreements, distributor notices and communication with over-the-air viewers.

Mark coordinated the transmitter upgrade and ATSC 3.0 system installation with the channel moves, partner agreements, regulatory work and viewer notices.

The launch

The broadcaster launched its initial ATSC 3.0 station.
